The boa raises its head,
black flecks on its brown body
twisting around a branch up in the canopy.
There were strange noises that day:
footsteps crunching branches, shouts,
and tears filling the nearby river.
The boa also remembers how
the white sails unfurled
reminded it of how clouds swell
before it rains.

Simple yet foreboding. The Spanish have arrived to plunder. Beautiful. Sad.
Most certainly.
low how striking this is in just a few lines
It’s one of our favs from the issue, too!
This poem is powerful, involving culture and even more about that includes specific aspects in time. I really like the concept and brevity about this poem, giving readers just enough details to imagine the whole picture. Very proud !!!
Powerful is an understatement!
