The breaking of a body is the start of a closing prayer,
It is the years of bible school put into practice under olive-oiled hands
that broke a body before,
in remembrance on every first Sunday.
The breaking of a body is the start of hell’s war, sister-
In remembrance on every first Sunday.
The breaking of a body ends in sirens and flashing lights,
And walls of Jericho crumbling into wailings,
Serpent’s grip around your chest,
The breaking of a body, means trigger warning first,
A trigger, warning, you will,
You will break your body bread
Ashlee Burnett is a 21 year old poet and teaching artist with the 2 Cents Movement. Her writing explores politics and body politics. The extended metaphor is a special power, and Ashlee is using it to tell stories of her experiences and for social commentary. Burnett is currently working on a body of work entitled ‘Adopted by Earthquake and Amens’, a collection of poems speaking on her diagnosis and life as an epileptic warrior.
