Q&A WITH THE ARTIST
1 – How did you come to art?
As a child, I remember always knowing that I would work in Marketing and Art. Currently, I am a Visual Artist and a Marketing & Business Development Consultant. (Previous Roles over the last 18 years: Trade Excellence Lead, Trade Marketing Manager, Marketing Manager -International Brands, Category Manager). I became an artist simply because I enjoy it. I have enjoyed drawing and painting from a very early age. One of my strongest memories from my childhood was drawing and painting with my parents, using vibrant colours with my Mother and learning the form and structures from my Father.
In my first ever art exhibition in May 2006 in The Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago (ASTT), I was awarded the Best Emerging Artist Award. This encouraged me to continue to paint and exhibit. I discovered that both as a Visual Artist and a Marketing & Business Development Consultant, I have the opportunity to create something.
During the pandemic, I made the jump into becoming a full time self-employed person. I wanted to know what it would feel like to be able to wake up and have the dedicated time to paint for the entire day. I wanted to explore a life filled with laughter and creativity and the opportunity to follow my dreams. I wanted to teach my children that it is ok to be brave, try new things and live a life in the present moment without regrets.
2 – Tell us about your process.
Before I start any piece of art, the space should be clear with only the materials needed for the project. I also pray and meditate to get into the right mindset of creating. This is intentional as it centers me. I then follow the steps: Create the concept, design and choose the materials, create and surface prep the canvas, paint, varnish, and frame to prepare to hang in galleries or in the customer’s space.
3 – Can you tell us a little about use of metallic paints and mixed media?
I enjoy working with vibrant colours – especially metallic paints. It has become my distinct signature to use some sort of metallic paint in my work. I also enjoy working with various textures (mixed media) artwork. Working with the layers of materials represents the freedom to create unique work that comes off of the canvas. I am able to bring my work to life and show the beauty of a topic or highlight current events.

Joy Luk Pat is a Trinidadian artist. In 2016, she won the title of Best Emerging Artist from the Art Society of Trinidad & Tobago and in 2021 she was bestowed the Excellence for Mixed Media Award by The Women In Art Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago (WIAOTT). In 2022, she staged her first solo exhibition, Wealth and Happiness, at Arnim’s Art Galleria, Port of Spain.
